Sean Mc Gibney
Sean Mc Gibney was born on 22nd March 1938. From demonstrating an early interest in art, he went on to become a leading fashion designer of his time, with his work selling everywhere from Switzers in Dublin to Macy’s in New York. In 1961, he married his childhood sweetheart, Irene Moran and they had two children, Aebhric and Aoife.
Sean maintained his love of drawing and painting throughout his career. He attended classes in NCAD and studied under artists such as Henry Healy and Desmond Carrick. Later in life, Sean took up painting full time and exhibited his work regularly on Merrion Square and in a number of galleries around town.
Decades of experience as a designer provided Sean with a great eye for portraiture and figure painting. For his landscapes, Sean was fascinated with atmosphere and light, inspired by the impressionists and fauvists. Sean also liked to paint in a contemporary style and his Celtic Warriors series of paintings sold worldwide.
Sean continued painting until the very last. His last exhibition was part of the People’s Art show on Stephen’s Green in September 2023, with many fellow artists helping him set up his display. Sean passed away in his 86th year on 17th May 2024 after a protracted illness. This retrospective aims to show the breadth of Sean’s work as an artist and is an expression of dedication by a son to his loving father.
